The Sooners have won six straight games to become the first team in college football history to win consecutive conference championships.
Oklahoma Sooners head coach Joe Castiglione said on Thursday the team has a new moniker for the 2015 season.
The Sooners’ new nickname is the Oklahoma State Thunder.
Castiglione told reporters the team’s name change comes about after a conversation with an Oklahoma State fan and the Oklahoma City Thunder, which both adopted the name Thunder before the 2014-15 season.
He said he also talked to a fan who asked for permission to change his name and the team agreed.
Castinelli said he has been talking to members of the Thunder family to ask them if they’d like to have the team name changed and to see if they would support it.
Oklahomans fans who don’t support Castiglioni plan to make the team their own with a petition to change the team to the Oklahoma Thunder.
OkieNation will provide updates on the status of the petition as soon as it is received.
