WASHINGTON — UC Football won its first national title since 2008 and secured the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Division I playoff, beating Wyoming 10-3 on Saturday to finish atop the Mountain West Conference.UC Football earned its first bowl berth in 12 years on Saturday, finishing a perfect 8-0 in the postseason.
The Golden Bears (10-3, 6-1 Mountain West) clinched the No, 2 seed in a three-team field and will face No. 3 seed Oklahoma State in the semifinals on Sunday.UC head coach Kevin C. Callahan said he was happy with the team’s performance in the first game of the season.
He said he thought UC Football played with heart and passion and showed the best of the conference.
UC scored three touchdowns in the game to take a lead, but Wyoming countered with a score from Chase Matson, who also scored a touchdown and ran for another.
The Golden Bears, who had won their previous four games, finished the day 24-13 on offense, which included three scores from receiver Andrew Davis.
UC had a touchdown on the first play of the first half from junior running back Hunter Thompson and another on the second from senior wide receiver J.C. Johnson.
UC also had a score on the third play of its first half.
The game was close in the third quarter, but UC finally got the ball back with less than two minutes to play in the second half.
UC was able to hold on for a 27-24 lead with just over three minutes left, but the Cowboys got back in the scoring game on the next play.
The Cowboys got a field goal from Chris Johnson and a first down from the 1 with 6:40 left in the quarter.
The win moved UC into the playoff.
UC will face the No., 3 seed in Oklahoma on Sunday, while Wyoming is No. 4.
