Northwestern football player Kevin Johnson, a junior from Chicago, has had a busy week at home, and his parents have been waiting for a call from him about his son’s graduation.
According to his mother, Jaylynn, Northwestern will announce the name of the football player it will honor on Thursday.
Johnson has been in school all week, but when his mom heard that Northwestern was finally announcing his name, she decided to tweet the news.
In a post on Twitter, Johnson wrote: My mom is going to be excited to hear the news from Northwestern, but as soon as I see them on Thursday, I will get a call.
He was not expecting this, so he posted a picture of his father’s phone.
He is the nicest person. “
My dad said he got a phone call about this, and he had to drive all the way from Illinois to see my son play, so I’m hoping they let me know,” Johnson told Al Jazeera.
“He is the nicest person.
He just loves his kids, and I love my dad.
My dad’s just a good dad, and it’s just awesome that he’s going to get to be able to do that.”
The family will celebrate Johnson’s birthday at his home on Thursday afternoon.
The family also has plans for a party, and a date for the festivities is still to be set.
With Northwestern’s new name, there will be a new expectation on how Northwestern football plays.
On Wednesday, Northwestern’s players were given a short ceremony to thank the school for naming their player.
Northwestern Football Players Association President Ryan McDonough said he and the players felt honored by the announcement.
“We feel very honored to be associated with this great institution that has made a name for itself on and off the field, and we feel the same way about Northwestern,” he said.
McDonough added that he was glad to see Northwestern announce the player’s name, and wished Johnson well for his future in the sport.
But the team’s coaches have not been pleased with the decision.
“It’s not an appropriate thing to do,” Northwestern Coach Pat Fitzgerald told reporters after practice on Wednesday.
“It’s the way that it was done.”
The team will play in the spring and will not be invited to the Rose Bowl.
Fitzgerald said that he and his players are planning to work hard to get Northwestern’s name right for Johnson, and that he had hoped to announce the quarterback’s name as soon after the football season was over.
However, he did not know when he would get a formal call from the school.
When asked what Northwestern is going through with its name, Fitzgerald said: “I don’t know, but I’m going to have to get through this.
I know that it’s a very good football program and that it has great athletes, but it’s time to move on from this.”
However the school’s athletic director did give some indication that it may be a bit too soon to talk about naming the player.
“I am not going to make any announcements until we know where he is in the process of being named,” Fitzgerald said, according to The Chicago Tribune.
Nolan Johnson was drafted by the Bears in the first round of the 2013 NFL draft.
